Ten tubes of different flavors of Zipfizz
These are the different flavors of the Zipfizz energy drink mix.

Since you are here, you’re probably thinking about buying Zipfizz but you are unsure about the product.

Don’t worry; I’ll tell you whether it is worth purchasing or not depending on factors like how it tastes, how it impacts your health, nutrition facts, pricing, and so on.

Zipfizz is a popular US brand that is not only incredible in taste but also good for your health. The collection of flavors is sure to amaze you. I’d give Zipfizz energy drink 8 out 10 rating in terms flavor, health benefits, and energy boost it provides.

I considered many factors for rating this product, and if you want to know more about it, let’s dive into the details.

Zipfizz Energy Drink Review

I tried out some Zipfizz products and reviewed them based on their flavors and ingredients.

Zipfizz energy drink comes in three varieties.

They are:

  • Powder
  • Energy shot
  • Immune health

The energy shot variety is actually a liquid formula so that I won’t be focusing on that. There is not much difference between the energy shot and the powder since they have the same ingredients such as caffeine.

On the other hand, the immune health variety is:

  • Caffeine free
  • Gluten free
  • Vegan friendly
  • Gives superior immune boost

Because of all these aspects, this variety is something you and your kids can give a try.

But, even if it does not contain caffeine, moderate intake is still what I recommend since it contains green tea leaf extract that may be dangerous when taken on an empty stomach or in excess.

This review will focus on the powder variety of Zipfizz and its different flavors since that is what I tried and tested.

To start my review, I’ll first go over the nutrients found in this product.

Sugar and Sucralose

There is no sugar in the Zipfizz energy drink. Instead, Zipfizz contains artificial sweeteners like sucralose and xylitol.

Zipfizz claims that the energy boost you get from Zipfizz does not come from high levels of sugar and caffeine since the product contains no sugar and only a small fraction of caffeine.

Due to this, you don’t have to worry about your blood sugar levels rising and then crashing. They also claim that the energy boost is big and lasts for 4-6 hours, which I experienced when I took the product.

To understand why many people avoid sugar consumption, it is important to know how energy drinks affect your body.

Experts suggests that within the first 10 minutes of intake of energy drinks containing sugar, you can get a rush of sugar in your bloodstream along with an increase in heart rate.

The feeling of energy mostly comes from the sugar glucose, which is distributed through the bloodstream, thus, creating a so-called “sugar rush.”

Note, though, that research suggests that the sugar rush is a myth because their results show that alertness decreased. At the same time, fatigue increased one hour after consuming carbohydrates (which break down into simple sugars).

As soon as sugar enters the cells, energy is produced. And because of this, the body receives a bump in energy. However, a sugar crash occurs one hour after drinking.

The above facts show that energy drinks can give you a feeling of energy, alertness and enthusiasm but Zipfizz does not have the unwanted side effects of a crash in sugar levels.

Caffeine

A pile of coffee beans
Caffeine has some tremendous health benefits if it’s taken moderately.

Each Zipfizz energy drink serving contains 100 mg of caffeine.

When you ingest energy drinks, caffeine enters the blood vessels and stops releasing the chemical compound adenosine.

When adenosine release is blocked, the body releases the hormones dopamine and norepinephrine, which help to increase your wakefulness.

A rise in caffeine levels also gives you the surge or boost of energy when you consume an energy drink, but this does not last very long.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, caffeine reaches its peak in the bloodstream 1 hour after intake and may work significantly for several hours.

In fact, 50% of the caffeine ingested will remain in your system even after 6 hours. But, over time, effectiveness declines.

The effects can last up to 12 hours before they wear off. When taken later in the day, this drink can cause fatigue or sleeplessness.

There is a lot of debate around whether caffeine is good or bad for you, and I won’t dig too much into the details.

But if you’re interested in finding out if energy drinks like Zipfizz are good or bad for you, keep reading.

Many sources unanimously state that the safe limit of caffeine intake is 400 mg.

Comparing this safe limit with Zipfizz’s caffeine level, you’ll notice that one serving of Zipfizz does not reach dangerous levels.

That means with moderate intake of Zipfizz there is no potential for health issues to arise. Just make sure you take four servings or even less than that per day.

Vitamin B12

Each serving of Zipfizz contains 2500 micrograms of vitamin B12.

Now, the question is how much vitamin B12 is safe.

According to experts, the safe limit to take vitamin B12 for adults is 3 micrograms daily and that, if you have a deficiency, the lowest dose to treat it would be at least 600 micrograms.

Apparently, each serving contains far more vitamin B12 than the standard limit.

Excess amounts of vitamin B12 can lead to some complications such as insomnia, acne, palpitations, and anxiety.

Other side effects as listed by Mayo Clinic are:

  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Tingling sensation in hands and feet

But, the good news is, they also state that vitamin B12 is water-soluble and is excreted by our body via urine. So you don’t have to worry if you consume in moderation and do not consume the product constantly.

I personally don’t take more than 3 servings a day to avoid side effects.

How many calories are in Zipfizz?

Each Zipfizz tube contains two net carbohydrates which provide 20 calories. Because of this, Zipfizz provides a small amount of carbs that will not be converted to a large amount of sugar and not cause fat accumulation.

In addition, there are no additional calories since sugar is not present and the artificial sugars present in the product do not yield energy.

Always keep in mind to not have a high caloric intake since not only can it cause increased fat buildup but also affect reproductive health.

Niacin

Niacin is a B vitamin that your body makes and uses to produce energy from food. This helps maintain your nerve, digestive, and skin health. Niacin is also helpful to the prevention and delay of cardiovascular diseases.

Experts recommend that adult men should take 16 milligrams (mg) of niacin per day while adult women who aren’t pregnant should take 14 micrograms per day.

Some studies show that high intake of Niacin has some side effects like:

  • Severe skin flushing
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Liver damage
  • Blurred vision

However, these side effects are not common and more research still needs to performed to study this topic.

The good news is that Zipfizz contains only 10 micrograms of niacin which is within recommended limit.

Ascorbic acid

Lemons and oranges with a glass filled with a citrus drink
Zipfizz contains a great deal of ascorbic acid.

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a powerful antioxidant that can boost your immune health. According to a study, taking vitamin C supplements helps relax the blood vessels carrying blood from the heart which lead to a drop in blood pressure levels.

In addition to that, ascorbic acid also contributes to a lot of other health benefits including preventing gout, heart disease, and iron deficiency.

The recommended daily vitamin C dosage is 90 mg for men and 75 mg for women. But, the upper limit is 2000 mg.

According to health experts, an overdose of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) causes:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Headache
  • Insomnia

Zipfizz contains 500 mg of ascorbic acid. Although it’s higher than safe recommendations, as mentioned earlier, the Mayo Clinic does state that the upper limit for intake is 2000 mg.

So drink Zipfizz in moderation per day and you will still garner the wonderful health benefits of ascorbic acid.

Pantothenic acid

One of the most important vitamins for human survival is vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid. Zipfizz contains only 5 mg of pantothenic acid which is within the safe limit.

The average daily intake for pantothenic acid is 5 mg for adults.

Vitamin B5 deficiency is very rare and usually, if there is a deficiency in one type of B vitamin then the other B vitamins will be lacking also.

Zipfizz does contain other types of B vitamins (as observed in the supplement table) which resembles the complex of B vitamins found in some vegetables, poultry, and fish.

Due to the vitamin’s role in breaking down carbs, proteins, and fats, it is important to have a proper diet rich in vitamin B.

Riboflavin

Riboflavin is also known as vitamin B2. According to the National Institute of Health, the recommended amount for vitamin B2 or riboflavin is around 1 mg for both men and women.

Zipfizz contains 0.85 mg of riboflavin which is within the safe limit of consumption.

Vitamin B6

Pyridoxine or vitamin B6 is another vitamin that helps the body convert food into energy. Among its many uses in the human body is its ability to promote the production of immune cells that fight off infections.

Vitamin B6 deficiency is uncommon in the US but supplements are still widely available.

However, there is a risk of side effects from the ingestion of an excess amount of vitamin B6. The recommended amount is less than 100 mg.

Fortunately, Zipfizz contains only a milligram of vitamin B6 which is well within the recommended limit.

Other Ingredients

There are also other key ingredients in Zipfizz, such as taurine and their special botanical antioxidant blend.

Taurine

Taurine is a substance that has no side effects if taken in small amounts but may affect liver health at higher amounts.

It is a natural amino acid derivative.

However, if you have kidney disease, you could potentially experience issues when taking energy drinks high in taurine.

But taurine also has plenty of potential health benefits such as:

The safe limit for taurine supplements is 3 g per day.

Zipfizz is vegan because its taurine source is green tea and grape extract.

Botanical antioxidant blend

There aren’t many specific details that can be discovered about this blend found in the Zipfizz powder. This is most likely a secret recipe they’ve created to stay competitive in the market.

I have discussed the ingredients found in this blend as well as their risks and benefits in this article I wrote and the antioxidant effects of the ingredients can potentially lead to some health benefits like:

  • strengthening brain function and helping with weight loss
  • easing nerve pain in diabetic patients
  • improving memory and raising energy

Here is a video showing a review of Zipfizz’s various flavors.

Grape

I tried most of the flavors and fell in love with grape. I enjoyed the pleasant smell and the taste of grapes was nice and sweet.

Fruit Punch

To me, another tasty flavor is Zipfizz’s fruit punch. At first, I thought I wouldn’t like it but, after tasting it, I totally love it. If you like fruit flavors, this one is a great choice for you.

Despite its sweet flavor, I still do not recommend giving it to your kids because they might get hooked and want to try some more.

Orange Soda

Personally, I’m not too fond of the orange soda flavor since it tastes almost like orange juice. However, if you really love the taste of oranges then you should give it a try.

Does Zipfizz energy drink have any side effects?

Zipfizz mixed in a water glass
Zipfizz is a great-tasting energy drink.

Zipfizz can have some potential side effects when consumed too much daily.

Side effects of other energy drinks are caused by the presence of sugar but this does not apply to Zipfizz. However, side effects caused by excessive caffeine consumption do still apply.

There has been some research done that highlights the ways sugary drinks can adversely impact health.

Sugared beverages were studied to see how they affected the brain. Observations revealed that these drinks caused the volume of the brain to decrease which is one of the precursors to Alzheimer’s disease.

Another study shows that sugary energy drinks can increase the chance of type 2 diabetes.

And there is also a study that shows the correlation between energy drink consumption and the increase in US adults’ mortality rate.

According to health experts, a high caffeine intake can increase blood pressure and they suggest only consuming up to 400 mg per day.

The side effects mentioned by the researchers and experts in the studies and articles seen above are listed as follows:

  • Insomnia with weight gain
  • Nervousness
  • Restlessness
  • Shaking
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue and sugar crashes
  • Stomach Irritation
  • Headaches
  • Chest pains
  • Vomiting
  • Increased heart rate
  • Caffeine addiction
  • Dehydration and weakness
  • Poor dental health
  • Kidney stones
  • Respiratory problems
  • Miscarriage
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney failure
  • Allergic reactions
  • Caffeine overdose
  • Niacin overdose
  • Risk-seeking behavior
  • Diabetes
  • Death

Where can you buy Zipfizz?

You can buy Zipfizz from your local store if you’re in the US. But you can also buy it online through:

VariantsPriceQuantityPrice per serving
Zipfizz energy drink miz $37.99 20 tubes$1.89
Zipfizz energy shot $29.99 24 bottles$1.24
Zipfizz immune health $29.99 30 packet$0.99
The prices of different variants of Zipfizz energy drink.

I think the price is a little bit high and I wish they were a little bit more affordable. They also typically sell in bulk instead of just selling the tubes individually when buying from the website.

Is Zipfizz healthy and good for you?

Taking the above evidence into account, it can be said that Zipfizz is not bad for your health and has a lot of benefits when taken in moderation. This is particularly true for adults.

On the other hand, after analyzing the ingredients in Zipfizz, I do not recommend this for those below 18 years old as children below 18 can develop some emotional and physical side effects after caffeine consumption.

Zipfizz only has 100 mg caffeine per tube but it’s best to avoid getting children hooked on this product.

Final Thoughts

No energy drink is completely free from potential side effects. But, as you can glean from my analysis, you saw that the amounts of most of the ingredients are within safe limits.

Another key selling point for Zipfizz is that they don’t use natural sugar but make use of artificial sugar instead. And they even have a product that doesn’t come with caffeine and which they claim boosts immunity; another key selling point for the brand.

The huge collection of delicious flavors is another thing worth admiring about this product.

Overall, I’m happy with this product and I’d rate Zipfizz energy drink 8 out of 10 in terms of flavor, health benefits, and the energy boost it provides.

That’s all for my honest Zipfizz review. I hope you found it informative.

Cheers!
